The .30-30 Remington (or .30-30 WCF?) Rimless...

In 1907, the Remington Arms Company began production of their first semi-automatic centerfire sporting rifle, the Model 8; introduced for use with this rifle were the .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remington rimless auto-loading cartridges. The .25, .30 and .32 cartridges were essentially rimless versions of cartridges that the Winchester Repeating Arms Company had developed in the mid-1890s for their Model 1894 rifle, these being the .25-35 Winchester, the .30-30 Winchester, and the .32 Winchester Special, respectively. It doesn't make sense to me that Remington could introduce rimless versions of Winchester's cartridges as their own without some resistance from Winchester, yet Remington initially named their thirty caliber cartridge the .30-30 Remington, and not only did Winchester appear not to have a problem with this, but they produced cartridges with the .30-30 Remington headstamp from 1907 to about 1915. This suggests to me that Winchester may have been involved with Remington in the development of the cartridges. Cartridges with the .30-30 Remington headstamp were also produced by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, the Peters Cartridge Company, and the United States Cartridge Company. I don't know why the name was eventually shortened to .30 Remington, but it may have been due to shooters getting the two .30-30 cartridges confused. Apparently, the .25 Remington was initially named the .25-35 Remington, as I have a 1907 Winchester catalog that lists it that way. I have found no evidence that the .25 Remington was ever produced with a .25-35 Remington headstamp by Winchester or any other maker.

The headstamps for the four US ammunition makers who produced the .30-30 Remington cartridge are shown below.

The following page from the January 1907 Winchester catalog (#73) lists the .25-35 Remington, .30-30 Remington and the .35 Remington Rimless Autoloading cartridges. There is no listing for the .32 Remington, which was apparently introduced sometime after the other three cartridges.

This next page is from the 1907 C. J. Godfrey Company catalog; it shows a listing and illustration for the U.M.C. .30-30 Remington cartridge.
