A 1950s Eley-Kynoch Catalog.........

As one of the many benefits of my recent retirement, I find myself at the moment in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where I hope to be off and on for the next several months. The view from the cabin tends to put me in a rather relaxed frame of mind, so I

am experiencing some difficulty coming up with new subject matter to write about. In addition, the hummingbirds are having a turf war centered around their feeders, so I have to keep one eye on them while I'm out here on the deck as they buzz around like a swarm of angry hornets, making it a bit difficult to concentrate while sitting at my laptop gathering information. Thank goodness they make that distinctive, low pitched humming noise which I can only assume gives them their name. They sound a little like low velocity bullets whizzing by.

I don't have access to the cartridge collection to give me ideas, so I'll be depending on some old catalogs for material for my monthly installments; my techno-challenged brain is a little reluctant to refer to these as 'blogs', but I suppose that's what they are. A small stack of these catalogs is far easier and far less cumbersome to transport than my cartridge collection, leaving the back of the van much less crowded for the cat, our Doodle dog, an assortment of house plants, boxes, and luggage that we packed for the journey. I can't help but think that we'd still find ourselves short of space if we were making these trips in an 18 wheeler.

.

Sometime in a past life I picked up this Eley-Kynoch ammunition and accessories catalog, one of a fairly large number of catalogs issued by a variety of ammunition manufacturers and sellers that I have somehow obtained over the years. A recent move necessitated my packing all the books and clutter that have accumulated after 25 years of living in one house, which proved to be an enlightening experience. In the process, I found many items that I wasn't aware that I had (this catalog was one of those), but managed to misplace much of what I was aware that did have. I'm still not finished unpacking, so I am confident that everything will reveal itself and I will regain some degree of order in my life.

While the catalog includes no prices, it does provide an illustrated inventory of the cartridges and shotgun shells that were being produced by the company at the time the catalog was issued which, according to the set of codes on the inside of the back cover, I believe was June of 1957.

I'll have posted pictures of pages from the catalog, which I hope will prove to be of interest. As this should not require much serious concentration, it should allow me to focus my most of my attention on those pesky little hummers. I have started with the shotgun shells.
